Spanish players reject call for new coach issuing a statement

Last Friday, September 15, 39 players, including 21 of the 23 world champions, issued a statement expressing concern that the conditions necessary to return to the national team were not guaranteed, especially after the scandal involving the former president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, and an incident of non-consensual kissing with player Jenni Hermoso. They also requested changes in different sectors of the Federation. Since then, the players have not spoken out publicly.

In her debut as coach, Montse Tomé called up 15 of the champions, as well as several others who signed the document, for the Nations League games against Sweden, on Friday (22), and against Switzerland, the following week.  “We, as elite professional players and after everything that happened today, will study the possible legal consequences to which the RFEF exposes us, placing us on a list from which we had asked not to be called for reasons already explained publicly and with more details to RFEF”, states the statement.
