In an interview with the Eurosport website, last Monday (29), a day after the end of the Giro d’Italia and on his birthday, Thibaut Pinot evaluated his performance in the competition, in which he won fifth place overall, discussed his next projects and stated that Tour de France will be his last race in professional sport. Previously, the athlete stated that he will retire at the end of 2023.
“I want to be on Tour. Hope to get an answer on this quickly. With the legs I have and with this top five from the Giro, I proved what I can do. I’m motivated, I want to help the team, that’s why I want to be there”, said the cyclist who is still waiting for an answer if he will race the Tour de France.
Thibaut Pinot by scoring enough points on the mountain stages for Crans Montana and Val Di Zoldo managed to get the blue jersey. Before this milestone, in 2014, at the Tour de France, the athlete had won the white jersey for the best young rider. “The objective of the start of this Giro was a stage victory, for sure, but I also came to do a good general classification and fight with the best. The best climber’s blue jersey is the icing on the cake,” he explained.
“My Giro is really something to be proud of. I would like to be on the last podium of the Giro because it would be something exceptional, but this is my story. The Giro is a bit of a paradox of my career, many times my defeats were more beautiful than my victories. What I will remember is that I really did my best and enjoyed everything. For me, the Giro remains the best race of my life”, concluded the athlete.
